Biometrics and Behavioural Patterns
Biometrics are a fairly matured system that can be utilised to greatly enhance the security of an account or device, by scanning a user’s own features. This is usually either a fingerprint scan, full-facial scan or iris scan. Biometrics have the advantage of being very accurate, fast and non-invasive, with the main disadvantage being the cost of implementing biometric sensors into devices that require it, for every person that requires it.
As the technology matures further, it is likely that biometrics will become the norm, as many devices already make good use of it, such as Apple’s iPhone, and MacBook and many other devices.
Behavioural biometrics analyse a user’s digital behaviour, such as location, IP address, device data, movements, inputs and cookie data. It passively monitors these behaviours to detect fraud and identity theft without adding friction to the user experience. It cannot solely be the authentication method.
