Overview


  • According to the United Nations’ official definition list, a megacity is an urban area with an extremely large population, typically exceeding 10 million inhabitants.
  • They are a product of rapid urbanisation and represent the extreme concentration of people, infrastructure, and economic activities within a single region.

  • As of 2023, a large concentration / distribution of megacities are present in the Asia region, with other megacities spread out throughout other continents at a lower concentration.
  • Most notably, most megacities are coastal.
